Chapter Six
Zayde was relieved when Sheriff Harper arrived. He felt like it had taken hours instead of twenty minutes for the guy to show up. As soon as the sheriff got out of his car, Zayde threw the front door open. âHeâs on the couch.â
âYou didnât tell me whatâs going on,â Sheriff Harper said.
As best he could, Zayde filled the sheriff in. He didnât know how it all started, how the demon had gotten his hands on his mate, but he told the sheriff about Panahasi coming to get him and what had taken place after that.
âIâve never heard of anyone named Kalin,â the sheriff said. âLet me take a look at Denali.â
The bear shifter walked inside, and Zayde closed the door behind him. He tried to imagine the sheriff as a bear but couldnât. He was still wrapping his mind around the fact that Denali was a lion shifter. Heâd seen his mate in his lion form for all of two seconds, and honestly, he wanted to see it again.
Sheriff Harper peeled back Denaliâs shirt then hissed. âFuck,â he grumbled. âYou said not even Phoenix could heal him?â
âNo.â Zayde stood quietly for a moment, his arms wrapped around his stomach. His mate was back to being unconscious, and he had sweat beading his forehead. âI thought shifters couldnât get sick. Why does he look like heâs running a fever?â
âThereâre a few exceptions,â Sheriff Harper said. âSilver poisoning is a real thing. That could kill us in a high enough dose. I once heard of someone whoâd had a magical collar put on him, and the only way to get it off was with the key. Supernatural things can harm us, and from what you told me, Denali was hurt with a fire whip by a demon.â
Zaydeâs hope shrank. âSo heâs screwed?â
âLet me make a phone call,â he said.
While the sheriff made his call, Zayde knelt by Denali. He brushed his hand over his mateâs sweaty forehead, praying Denali made it out of this alive.
Zayde screamed when a purple-haired man simply appeared in his living room.
âOh good.â The stranger looked relieved. âI was hoping I wouldnât materialize into a piece of furniture. I donât know the layout of your house.â
Zayde stood there frozen, unsure what to say or do. âWho are you?â
âIâm Gage,â the guy said.
âI called him,â Sheriff Harper said when he came back into the room. âGage is a fairy.â
âYou werenât supposed to know that,â Gage said to the sheriff. âWho spilled the beans?â
âThat battle you had with your father?â the sheriff said. âThings donât stay a secret around here. Anyway, can you take a look at Deputy Davisâs wound and tell me if you can heal it?â
Hope blossomed inside Zayde. âIâm going out on a limb and guessing that youâre magical.â
Gage smiled at him. âThen you picked the right limb. Let me take a look.â
Holding his breath, Zayde watched as Gage examined Denali. âWhat did this?â
âFrom what I understand, a whip made of fire,â Zayde said. âSome demon named Kalin.
